Industrial history and significance

• Tin streaming, mining, (and foundries and metal smelting) were located at Devoran and nearby before the 1820s.
• Redruth and Chasewater Railway from 1824 linked to principal Cornish mining areas, created quays and settlement - Devoran was a major industrial port in Cornwall for the 40-year heyday of Cornish mining.
• The significance of the wharf and railway remains is well understood, but there were also other important factors in settlement – The Mitchell family, the role of local landowners.
• Devoran as a settlement, rather than simply a rail-based mineral port, has a much more complex history and significance than is usually recognised.
• Devoran is different in character from other mineral ports in Cornwall. Planned from the outset to be a complete new town, symmetrically disposed, designed and built of a piece, it remains the best example in Cornwall at this scale of a planned 19^th century settlement, intended to be more than just a mineral port - a place of general trade, professional and commercial significance, and a fit place for genteel and retired people to live.
• In this respect it is a good intact example of a mid-19th century industrial settlement that went on to find a new future as a commuter village, a role that has ensured its survival.

This settlement forms part of the proposed Cornwall & west Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site Bid, and is considered an important part of the context for the Bid.
