Industrial history and significance

Attached to Delabole Quarry, one of the most significant industrial sites in Great Britain
Anciently established settlement pattern and landscape altered by increasing scale of industrial activity
Well documented and dateable process of settlement development
Significantly pre-dates advent of railway connectionsKey role played in settlement development by capital proprietors of local industry
‘Control’ and comparison with other industrial settlements in different key industries in Cornwall

Consideration should be given to an integrated designation approach (including listing, conservation areas and scheduling) to quarries and other related sites in and further afield from Delabole. The standing buildings, current workings, sites of dumps, former workings, the links to the settlement, links to ports on the north coast, the railways etc., all formed an integrated system, several hundred years in the making, and today unique in its scale and character in Cornwall and the wider region. Wider interpretative, designation, and management schemes encompassing a considerable area around Delabole should be considered.
